InCube Challenge by ETH Entrepreneur Club - 26. - 30. September 2019

The InCube Challenge is back. The Innovation Club is proud to be the networking partner for this great event.

What is the InCube Challenge?

InCube is an international competition, where students live for four days in a glass cube. They need to define the problem they want to tackle, ideate for solutions and create a prototype. At the final event, the different teams compete in a pitch battle in front of a live audience and jury.

Where InCube takes place?

This year’s cubes are located in Zürich (Sihlpost & Pradeplatz), Boston (MIT Campus), Lausanne and Singapore.
Each location is supported by one of the Cube Partners, which help define the specific challenge that the participants need to work on. The participants will be assigned to one of the Cubes, where their strengths work best.

Who can apply?

All students (Bachelor, Master and PhDs) are welcome to apply. The organizing team will review each application and select the 2019 Cubees.

The Student Journey of InCube

  1. Applications : fill-out the online application

  2. StarterCube: the selected Cubees will receive a package to learn about the content and the stages of InCube

  3. OutCube: a weekend in a Swiss mountain resort for team-building and workshops to optimally prepare for InCube

  4. InCube: four days of challenge in a glass Cube. Experts and academic partners provide some guidance on the way to a solution, while everything is visible for the public

  5. Startup Concept: the Cubees are encouraged to continue working on their InCube project.

FoodWaste

To ensure a bright future for the next generations, every citizen on this planet has a responsibility to bring a positive change in terms of sustainability. Food waste is one concern that we should pay attention to, especially when “one-third of the food produced in the world for human consumption every year — approximately 1.3 billion tonnes — gets lost or wasted” (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 2019). How can we bring an innovative solution to improve this situation? Would it be possible to have a world without food wasting? What are the food waste projects currently running in Switzerland? On this important topic, we have the opportunity to invite three Swiss leaders in the food waste economy and discuss their business concept as well as their vision regarding food waste.

Our speakers

Mirko Buri

-          Food waste pope, founder and chef of the no food waste restaurant and food delivery “Mein Küchenchef”

Introduction to Machine Learning : Applications, Perils, Promises

The fourth industry revolution implies the digitalization of many aspects of life, making available huge data sets that are too large and too complex to be dealt by human intelligence. Machine learning, a subset of artificial intelligence, is the science of getting computers to learn and act like humans do by feeding them with big data. The machines learn in an autonomous way and improve themselves over time. Machine learning is successfully applied in everyday life, from Amazon to Netflix passing by Spotify, Google and many more. In this event, real-life cases will be used to introduce you to Machine Learning.

This event is open to everyone. No prior knowledge of statistics, computer science or Machine Learning is necessary.

A networking aperitif will follow this event.

Our speakers:

Prof. Dr. Martin Huber

Martin is Professor at the University of Fribourg and holder of the Chair of Applied Econometrics. He will briefly introduce Machine Learning in a non-technical way, discuss perils and promises of Machine Learning and demonstrate an application in which he used Machine Learning to solve a relevant real-world problem, namely the detection of cartels in Switzerland.

Michele Alberti, Ph.D. Candidate

Michele is a researcher at the University of Fribourg and member of the Document Image Voice Analysis Group. He will briefly introduce Deep Learning, a subset of Machine Learning. Primarily, he will present how Deep Learning is able to solve practical real-world issues, such as the analysis of voice and images.
